Getting Started with Aerial Arts: What to Expect

Walking into your first aerial class can feel both exciting and intimidating. The colorful silks hanging from the ceiling, the graceful movements of experienced students, and the thought of lifting yourself off the ground—it is a lot to take in. But here is what I tell every new student: everyone starts somewhere, and aerial arts are more accessible than you might think.
What to Wear
Comfort is key for your first class. We recommend fitted clothing that covers your arms and legs—think leggings or yoga pants and a fitted t-shirt or long-sleeve top. Loose clothing can get tangled in the apparatus, and exposed skin might get irritated from contact with the silks or lyra. Avoid jewelry, watches, or anything with zippers or buttons that could snag the fabric.
Pro Tip
Bring a water bottle and a small towel. You will work up a sweat, even in beginner classes. We have cubbies for your belongings, but we recommend leaving valuables at home.
Your First Class Experience
At Cirque du Kairos, all new aerial students begin with our Aerial Foundations class. This 60-minute session introduces you to silks, hammock, hoop, and trapeze in a supportive, judgment-free environment. You will start on the ground, learning basic grips, wraps, and body positioning before ever leaving the floor.
Do not worry about upper body strength—while it helps, it is not required. Many of our strongest aerialists started with zero upper body strength. Technique, timing, and leverage matter far more than raw power. Your body will adapt quickly, and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish within just a few weeks.
Common First-Day Concerns
"I am not strong enough"
This is the concern we hear most often, and it is simply not true. Aerial arts build strength progressively. You will start with movements that work with your current fitness level, and your body will adapt faster than you expect. Many of our instructors started their aerial journey unable to do a single pull-up.
"I am afraid of heights"
You will begin close to the ground, and your instructor will never push you beyond your comfort zone. Many students find that their comfort with height grows naturally as their skills and confidence develop. There is no pressure to climb high until you are ready.
"Everyone else will be better than me"
Foundations classes are designed for beginners. Everyone in the room is starting their journey, and our community is famously welcoming and supportive. At Cirque du Kairos, we cheer for each other is successes, whether it is your first climb or your first performance.
Ready to Fly?
Your first step is just showing up. We offer Aerial Foundations classes seven days a week at both our Ogden and Centerville locations. New students get 50% off their first drop-in class—no membership required.

After completing Foundations, you will be ready to specialize. Whether you are drawn to the vertical storytelling of silks, the spinning grace of lyra, or the dynamic movement of trapeze, there is an apparatus for everyone. Many of our students train multiple disciplines, and some discover a passion they never expected.
Aerial arts are not just about fitness—they are about creativity, expression, and community. You will meet people from all walks of life, united by a shared love of movement and flight. Welcome to the circus family. We cannot wait to see you in the air.
